A special court in Kolkata is likely to hear a plea from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 30 September regarding a narco-analysis test of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
This request is part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor within the hospital premises.
On the same day, the court will also review the CBI’s request for a polygraph test for Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, which oversees the jurisdiction of RG Kar Medical College.
Ghosh and Mondal are currently in judicial custody and will appear in court for the proceedings.
The CBI previously conducted a polygraph test on Ghosh, and now seeks a narco-analysis to compare findings from both tests.
While the polygraph test, often referred to as a lie detector test, assesses physiological responses such as blood pressure and pulse to determine truthfulness, the narco-analysis involves administering sodium pentothal, known as a truth serum, to induce a state of hypnosis believed to elicit truthful responses.
It is important to note that neither test can proceed without the consent of the individuals involved.
On 25 September, the special court denied bail to both Ghosh and Mondal, highlighting the serious nature of the charges against them, which include misleading the initial investigation and tampering with evidence.
The judge remarked that if the allegations are substantiated, the defendants could face capital punishment.
