In a fierce encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district, four soldiers and a senior police officer sustained injuries on Saturday.
The gunfight took place in the Adigam village after security personnel launched an operation based on specific intelligence about the presence of militants in the area.
According to officials, a joint team of the Army, J&K Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) initiated a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Adigam.
As they cautiously approached the area to prevent civilian casualties and property damage, the security forces met with heavy gunfire from the terrorists.
The injured personnel include Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mumtaz Ali Bhatti from Kulgam and four soldiers from the Rashtriya Rifles: Sepoys Mohan Sharma, Sohan Kumar, Yoginder, and Mohammad Isran.
Rescuers however immediately evacuated the injured to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Additionally, security forces sent reinforcements to the area and sealed all possible escape routes to prevent the terrorists from fleeing.
The operation is ongoing, and the security forces are working to neutralize the remaining militants in the region.
Authorities suspect that highly trained foreign mercenaries carried out several hit-and-run attacks in recent months.
These attacks have targeted the Army, local police, and civilians in the hilly districts of Doda, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi in the Jammu division.
Over 4,000 Soldiers Deployed To Combat Terrorism
To combat this growing threat, over 4,000 soldiers, including elite Para Commandos and mountain warfare specialists, have been deployed in the hilly and forested regions of Jammu.
This strategy has significantly reduced the frequency of terrorist attacks, as the security forces have been able to establish greater control over the difficult terrain.
Despite the recent escalation in violence, security forces have maintained pressure on the militants through sustained operations.
With an increased presence in the region, they have successfully engaged several militant groups in gunfights, thwarting attempts to destabilize the area.
The situation in Kulgam remains tense as the search operation continues, but officials are confident that the intensified efforts will prevent further terrorist activities in the region.
