SC To Hear Petitions On Allegations Of Animal Fat In Tirupati Temple Prasad

On September 30, the Supreme Court will hear petitions regarding allegations that animal fat has been used in the Prasad of Tirupati Temple Prasad. The petitions, filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and former Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam president YV Subba Reddy of the YSR Congress Party, call for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Subramanian Swamy’s petition demands the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by a retired Supreme Court judge to probe the claims made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Swamy has urged the court to take legal action against those responsible for undermining religious faith and has requested a detailed report from the Andhra Pradesh government regarding the fat used in the temple’s famous laddus, along with a comprehensive forensic analysis.

The controversy arose after the state government cited a Gujarat laboratory report, which allegedly indicated that the ghee used in the laddus, Tirupati Temple Prasad, contained traces of beef, fish oil, and pig fat. Hindu Sena chief Surjeet Yadav, who also filed a petition, stated that the findings have shaken the faith of millions of Hindus and called for strict measures against those who have hurt Hindu sentiments.

Yadav emphasized that the petitions represent the concerns of ordinary citizens who may lack the financial and legal resources to file Public Interest Litigations (PILs). Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government has established a nine-member SIT to investigate the allegations further.

The case will be heard by a bench comprising Justice BR Gavai and Justice KV Vishwanathan.
