Arvind Kejriwal, convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Chief Minister of Delhi, has announced his resignation, triggering a significant political debate. His decision came just two days after the Supreme Court granted him bail with certain conditions. The Court had barred Kejriwal from visiting his office and signing official files.
Political Reactions to Resignation
The BJP quickly responded, claiming Kejriwal’s resignation was a result of the Supreme Court’s restrictions. BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa argued that Kejriwal had no choice but to resign because he couldn’t fulfill his duties under the imposed conditions.
Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav welcomed Kejriwal’s decision but questioned the timing. He suggested that Kejriwal should have resigned immediately rather than waiting two days.
AAP’s National Spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar defended Kejriwal, asserting that he was setting a new standard of honesty and would only return to the Chief Minister’s office through an electoral mandate.
Criticisms and Defense
BJP leader Harish Khurana labeled Kejriwal’s resignation as mere drama. He criticized Kejriwal for remaining in office despite being barred from performing his official duties.
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit described the resignation as a “gimmick,” highlighting the unusual nature of the Supreme Court’s conditions. He argued that this situation was unprecedented and questioned the morality behind Kejriwal’s tenure.
BJP’s Kapil Mishra, a former minister in Kejriwal’s cabinet, celebrated the resignation as a victory for the people of Delhi. He compared it to the resignation of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, portraying it as a win against corruption.
Earlier in the day, Kejriwal addressed a party meeting, explaining that he did not resign from jail to protect the Constitution. He aimed to challenge the notion that a government cannot function from prison, asserting that the Supreme Court’s decision proved otherwise.
