An ongoing protest by junior doctors and medical students from various Kolkata colleges entered its second day on Tuesday, as demonstrators continued their indefinite sit-in near the Kolkata Police headquarters.
The protest, which began on Monday afternoon, shows no signs of waning, with participants enduring a night of hardship under the open sky.
The demonstration was sparked by dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s handling of the rape-murder case involving a woman doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Despite the arrest of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, by the CBI late Monday, the protesters remain resolute in their demand for the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal.
They accuse the city police of negligence in the initial stages of the investigation, which the CBI later took over following intervention by the Calcutta High Court.
One of the protesting doctors declared their commitment, explaining that they regularly work 24 to 36 hours straight without sleep. They criticized the city police for testing their patience and vowed to stay on the streets without food or water until they met their demands.
In a show of solidarity, several prominent Bengali celebrities, who have been vocal about the case, joined the protestors on Monday night.
Their presence provided a morale boost, with some spending the night alongside the demonstrators and singing revolutionary songs to keep spirits high.
The protestors’ demands are clear: justice for the victim and accountability for the Kolkata Police.
The sit-in has featured chants and slogans calling for the resignation of the police commissioner, reflecting the deep frustration felt within the medical community.
Meanwhile, Sandip Ghosh, along with three others arrested in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar, will appear before a special court in Kolkata on Tuesday morning.
They completed their medical examinations overnight following their arrests. The legal proceedings will receive close attention as the case unfolds.
