Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its academic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Inonu University in Turkiye due to national security concerns, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The MoU, signed on 3 February for three years, focused on promoting cross-cultural research and student exchange.
But JNU announced on X, “Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Türkiye stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation. ”
Inonu University, based in Malatya, had joined the agreement to enhance international academic ties.
The suspension follows rising diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, with Turkiye openly supporting Islamabad.
India’s trade relations with Turkiye now face potential strain. Ankara’s condemnation of India’s recent strikes on terror camps in Pakistan has sparked nationwide calls for boycotts.
Turkish tourism and imports are being targeted by growing public sentiment.
The Indian Express reported that Turkish apples have not yet arrived in Pune and Mumbai’s wholesale fruit markets this season.
Typically available between October and January, these apples were part of a steady import stream.
Traders have shown strong backing for the boycott.
A Pune-based trader said, “Apples from the US, Poland, Iran, and South Africa are sufficient to meet domestic demand.”
Himachal Pradesh and other northern states are also contributing heavily to apple supply.
India imported 11.76 lakh tonnes of apples from Turkiye in 2023–24, making it a key player. Other Turkish exports include pistachios, peas, and lentils, like masur.
