The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Uttarakhand government concerning the murder of Tasneem Jahan, a Muslim nurse from Rudrapur. The case, presented by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind with significant support from President Maulana Arshad Madani, was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. Senior Advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan, representing the deceased’s family, criticized the local police for their lack of professionalism and delayed response. Despite an initial report of Jahan’s disappearance, the police acted only after public outcry, resulting in the arrest of a suspect. The deceased’s young daughter was left in distress, learning of her mother’s death a week later.
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Pushes for Justice and Accountability
Ramakrishnan highlighted that the police had not adhered to the Supreme Court’s 2022 guidelines on handling missing persons. She urged the court to step in due to the procedural failings and recurring issues in the region. Initially, the Chief Justice suggested referring the case to the Uttarakhand High Court. However, following further arguments, the bench, including Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, decided to directly address the case and issued a notice to the state government.
Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind’s petition, supported by Maulana Arshad Madani, calls for a CBI investigation into FIR No. 406/2024 and compensation for Jahan’s family. The petition also seeks national guidelines for the protection of medical staff. Maulana Madani welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and expressed frustration over the lack of national attention given to this case compared to other high-profile incidents. He praised the court for its intervention and expressed hope that justice would be served for Tasneem Jahan, affirming Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind’s commitment to seeking justice through legal means.
