An internal investigation at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata has culminated in a report that recommends disciplinary measures against 37 individuals, following serious allegations of a ‘threat culture’ within the institution.
The probe initiated in response to complaints involving 59 staff members, including both senior and junior doctors.
Sources indicate that of the 59 individuals investigated, the majority face strong disciplinary action, while 16 others will receive moderate penalties.
The remaining six individuals will remain under observation as the situation develops.
This report comes at a crucial time when junior doctors, represented by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), have resumed their cease-work protest.
This agitation stems from the recent brutal rape and murder of a fellow colleague at RG Kar Medical College.
The forum has placed the issue of ‘threat culture’ at the forefront of their renewed demands, which include the establishment of inquiry committees across all medical colleges to investigate those implicated in threats and harassment.
WBJDF Demands State Inquiry Committee To Address Allegations
The WBJDF has issued a 10-point demand list, which emphasizes the need for a state-level inquiry committee to address these serious allegations effectively.
The forum stated, “Every medical college must establish inquiry committees to investigate those involved in threat syndicates and punish them.”
In the wake of these developments, several doctors previously accused of participating in this alleged threat culture have already faced suspension from the West Bengal Medical Council.
Additional suspensions have been enacted by the state health department.
Notably, many of the accused doctors are likely to be close associates of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, who is currently in judicial custody facing charges related to the rape and murder case.
Investigators are also examining Ghosh for financial irregularities at the institution, conducting two separate probes.
