In an incident of misconduct aboard an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Mumbai, a 42-year-old passenger was arrested by Mumbai Police for smoking a beedi inside the aircraft’s restroom. The vigilant crew of the flight detected the strong odor, sparking suspicion, and conducted a thorough search. The source of the scent was traced to a passenger smoking a beedi in the restroom. Prompt intervention by the crew prevented any escalation of the situation.
Upon landing at Mumbai Airport, the unruly passenger was handed over to the local police. The distinct scent of the beedi, coupled with the crew’s quick response, led to an investigation. The passenger admitted to the act during questioning, resulting in the filing of charges under IPC Section 336 and the Aircraft Act. The individual is presently in judicial custody, according to official statements.
This incident is not an isolated occurrence, highlighting a recurring challenge faced by airlines. In a similar event in August of the previous year, a male passenger was caught smoking inside the restroom of an IndiGo flight bound for Mumbai from Dubai. Following an inquiry, a partially burned cigarette was discovered in the lavatory, prompting the crew to question the passenger upon landing in Mumbai.
