India is likely to bolster its standing as a global leader in healthcare innovation through a new collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The government announced that the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology (SCTIMST) in Kerala, under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the WHO.
This partnership aims to advance the production of medical devices within the country.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, emphasized the importance of scaling up the production of indigenous medical devices to meet the growing domestic and global demand.
“While India has made strides in developing homegrown technologies, the challenge now is to produce them at the required volume,” Dr. Singh stated.
The minister highlighted that this collaboration not only aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ but also opens up new opportunities for global partnerships and revenue generation through licensing and royalties.
He further added that the Ministry of Science and Technology fully supports this MoU, which enables SCTIMST and DST to partner with international entrepreneurs, foster innovation, and create economic value.
Dr. Singh underscored that the partnership with WHO will also contribute to building a highly skilled workforce, further enhancing India’s manufacturing capabilities in the healthcare sector.
He noted that SCTIMST boasts world-class facilities involved in cutting-edge technologies such as in-vitro testing, genomics, precision medicine, and vaccine production.
Expressing confidence in the collaboration, Dr. Singh remarked that this partnership is a significant step towards positioning India as a frontrunner in healthcare technology development, particularly in the area of medical diagnostics.
“This collaboration with WHO is likely to bring forth more innovations and foster international cooperation, reinforcing India’s leadership in healthcare innovation,” Dr. Jitendra Singh added.
