India has added 30 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy generation capacity in 2025 and expects to reach 43 GW by year-end, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Wednesday.
“From January to June, we recorded 22 GW from solar and wind projects. By now, we have reached 30 GW. I am confident we will end the year with 39–43 GW,” Joshi said at an industry event.
Government Targets 500 GW Renewable Energy by 2030
Based on the progress and steps taken to resolve transmission bottlenecks, Joshi expressed confidence in achieving India’s larger goal of 500 GW installed renewable capacity by 2030.
India’s installed renewable capacity currently stands at 226 GW. Projects worth 186.3 GW are under implementation, while another 67.08 GW have been tendered.
“Including existing capacity, we will reach about 499 GW,” Joshi said.
Joshi said the government is improving weather forecasting systems to enhance project performance and addressing delays in signing power sale agreements (PSAs).
The Centre has amended bidding guidelines for solar, wind, and hybrid projects, allowing cancellation of letters of award (LoAs) if developers miss deadlines by more than 12 months.
The power ministry has also prepared a detailed transmission plan to integrate 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, covering all energy-rich states.
Joshi revealed that the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is preparing to launch:
- Phase III of the Green Energy Corridor project
- Phase II of the PM-KUSUM scheme
Both initiatives aim to strengthen renewable infrastructure and boost rural energy generation.
IREDA Chief Highlights Investment Needs
Speaking at the same event, Pradeep Kumar Das, CMD of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), said India must mobilise ₹30 trillion by 2030. He stressed the need to deepen bond markets and strengthen NBFCs to finance renewable expansion.
Das noted that India’s solar module manufacturing capacity has surged from 38 GW in 2023-24 to 100 GW in 2025. He said this marks a major shift from near-total import dependence to self-reliance across the value chain.
