On Wednesday, India observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah leading tributes to those affected by the tragic events of Partition.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the profound suffering endured by countless individuals during the Partition. He emphasized the resilience and courage of those who rebuilt their lives despite the horrors they faced. Modi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to preserving the unity and brotherhood of the nation.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, we recall the countless people who were impacted and greatly suffered due to the horrors of Partition. It is also a day to pay tributes to their courage, which illustrates the power of human resilience. A lot of those impacted by Partition went on to rebuild their lives and attain immense success. Today, we also reiterate our commitment to always protect the bonds of unity and brotherhood in our nation.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also marked the occasion on X, expressing solemn respect for the millions who endured suffering and loss during what he described as a hideous episode in Indian history. He underscored the importance of remembering history as a cornerstone of nation-building.
Taking to X, Shah posted, “On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day my homage to the millions who suffered inhumane pains, lost lives, turned homeless during this most hideous episode of our history. Only a nation that remembers its history can build its future and emerge as a powerful entity. Observing this day is a foundational exercise in the process of nation building under the leadership of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji.”
In 2021, PM Modi announced 14 August as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas or Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, to honor those who perished or displaced during Partition.
PM Modi emphasized that the pain of Partition remains unforgettable, citing the immense dislocation and loss of life that accompanied India’s division.
As India gained independence from British rule on 15 August 1947, Partition led to one of the largest migrations in human history. Around 20 million people affected, with families fleeing their homes and becoming refugees during a period of profound upheaval and strife.
