Amit Shah Commemorates Partition Horrors Day; Stresses Historical Memory For Nation-Building
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also marked the occasion on X, expressing solemn respect for the millions who endured suffering and loss during what he described as a hideous episode in Indian history. He underscored the importance of remembering history as a cornerstone of nation-building.

In 2021, PM Modi announced 14 August as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas or Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, to honor those who perished or displaced during Partition.
PM Modi emphasized that the pain of Partition remains unforgettable, citing the immense dislocation and loss of life that accompanied India’s division.
As India gained independence from British rule on 15 August 1947, Partition led to one of the largest migrations in human history. Around 20 million people affected, with families fleeing their homes and becoming refugees during a period of profound upheaval and strife.
