IMD Issues Red Alert For Five Days In Hyderabad As Heavy Rains Cause Chaos

For the past few days, the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad in Telangana had been witnessing normal rainfall. However, the abrupt downpour in the cities has plunged the cities into chaos. Anticipating heavy rains in the twin cities, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the upcoming five days.

The current rains in the capital city are attributed to a low-pressure area formed due to cyclonic circulation over the west-central and adjoining North-western Bay of Bengal, near the North Andhra-South Odisha coasts by the IMD. Moreover, the monsoon season has exacerbated the situation, resulting in significant difficulties for commuters.

Areas in Hyderabad such as Ikea Junction, HiTech City and Cable Bridge over Durgam Cheruvu are witnessing gridlock, consequent to bumper-to-bumper traffic lasting for over two hours.

Additionally, numerous regions, including Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Ranigunj, Hussian Sagar tank bund, Ameerpet, Saroor Nagar, Malakpet, Borabanda, Bahadurpura, and Toli Chowki, have been severely inundated.

In a brief half-hour downpour, places like Sardar Mahal, Charminar, Malakpet, Saroor Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Khairatabad, Secunderabad, Bahadurpura, Golconda, Himayatnagar, Nampally, LB Nagar, Shaikpet, BHEL, Asifnagar, Jubilee Hills, Balanagar, Kukatpally, Miyapur, and Yusufguda received more than four centimetres of rainfall.

The heavy rains have disrupted daily life in the cities, leading to severe traffic jams and slow-moving vehicles, especially during peak morning hours when people are commuting to work. Low-lying areas have been submerged in floodwater, and residents are struggling to remove water from their homes using buckets and other containers, but with limited success. The Great Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has advised people to stay indoors until the rains subside.

Efforts are underway by GHMC staff to clear uprooted trees in various localities. However, the situation remains tense due to rising water levels in the Hussain Sagar Lake. With the expectation of more heavy rains in the upcoming days, many residents are urging authorities to declare school holidays to prioritize safety and minimize further inconvenience.
