The Supreme Court criticized the Central government for its failure to take action against states governed by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. The court’s strong remarks came as it questioned the government’s inaction in providing reservations for women in Nagaland.
Addressing the government’s approach, the court pointedly asked, “Why do you refrain from acting against state governments from your own party? You adopt strict stances against other state governments that do not align with your views, but you remain inactive when it concerns your own party’s government in the state.”
The court’s observations were made during the hearing of a contempt plea, which alleged non-compliance with the court’s order directing the Nagaland government and the State Election Commission (SEC) to conduct local body elections with 33% reservation for women.

“Reservation is a concept of affirmative action. Women’s reservation is based on that. How do you sidestep the constitutional provision? I fail to comprehend this,” expressed Justice SK Kaul.
Emphasizing the importance of women’s representation, Justice Kaul further noted, “Nagaland is a state where the education, economic, and social status of women is among the best. That is precisely why we cannot accept any reasons for not implementing reservations for women.”
During the hearing, the court also mentioned the violence in BJP-ruled Manipur.
