The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has announced an extension for receiving feedback on the Draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill. The new deadline for comments is October 15, 2024. This extension aims to ensure broader consultations with all relevant stakeholders.
The draft Bill was first made available to the public on November 10, 2023. Along with the draft, the Ministry released explanatory notes inviting feedback from stakeholders and the general public. Since then, the Ministry has received numerous recommendations, comments, and suggestions from various associations and individuals.
In response to the extensive feedback, the I&B Ministry is conducting a series of consultations with stakeholders to gather more input. The extended deadline is intended to allow additional time for further comments and suggestions. Following these consultations, the Ministry plans to release a revised draft of the Bill.

The proposed Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill aims to replace the existing Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act of 1995. This Bill proposes the establishment of a Broadcast Advisory Council, which would include government members responsible for addressing complaints against broadcasters. Additionally, the new regulations could potentially extend to streaming platforms and online influencers, depending on future notifications by the Ministry.
Concerns have been raised by groups such as the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF). They have highlighted that under the proposed regulations, broadcasters would need to adhere to a government-prescribed code. Non-compliance could result in monetary penalties or even imprisonment.
In summary, the I&B Ministry is actively seeking input on the draft Bill and has extended the feedback period to accommodate more extensive consultations. This move reflects the Ministry’s commitment to addressing concerns and refining the proposed regulations before finalizing the draft.
