Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ramesh Bidhuri, contesting from the Kalkaji Assembly constituency in Delhi, withdrew his controversial remarks about Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday. Bidhuri clarified that his comments were not intended to offend anyone and expressed regret if they caused hurt.
Bidhuri’s comments about making roads “as smooth as Priyanka Gandhi’s cheeks” sparked anger, especially from Congress. The party condemned the statement as “obnoxious” and demanded an apology from BJP leadership.
Clarification Amid Row
Addressing the backlash, Bidhuri said his remarks referenced similar statements by former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav, not Priyanka Gandhi directly. He accused Congress of selective outrage, citing Lalu’s earlier comments about actress-turned-politician Hema Malini.
“Priyanka Gandhi is treated differently because of her VIP status. Hema Malini, from a general family, also deserves respect. If my words hurt anyone, I apologize and retract them,” Bidhuri told reporters.
Congress Slams BJP
Reacting sharply, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate called the BJP “anti-woman” and described Bidhuri’s remarks as “shameful” and reflective of an “ugly mindset.” She demanded a public apology from BJP leaders to Priyanka Gandhi.
The controversy underscores the rising tensions between BJP and Congress as the Assembly election campaign gains momentum. Bidhuri’s comments have added fuel to the already heated political exchanges.
