Kozhikode witnessed the sudden passing of V Srinivasan, husband of Rajya Sabha member and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, early on Friday.
Srinivasan collapsed at his residence in Payyoli, Kerala, and doctors at a nearby private hospital declared him dead after he was rushed there immediately. Family sources reported that he felt uneasy around midnight before the incident.
The news has sent shockwaves through political and sporting circles across India. At the time, Usha was in New Delhi attending the ongoing Parliament session. She is returning to her hometown and is expected to arrive shortly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke to Usha and expressed his deepest sympathies over the loss of her husband.
The Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength for Usha to endure this irreparable loss.
Life and Legacy of V Srinivasan
Srinivasan hailed from Ponnani in Malappuram district and had a long-standing association with sports.
The couple married in 1991. A former kabaddi player, he later joined the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), serving as an officer.
Despite his professional and sporting background, Srinivasan maintained a low public profile, focusing on supporting Usha throughout her athletics career and later during her transition into sports administration and politics.
Close associates describe him as disciplined, soft-spoken, and committed to the values of sport and public service. He is survived by Usha and their son, Dr Ujjwal Vighnesh.
Condolences have poured in from sportspersons, political leaders, and sports administrators across the country.
Many noted Srinivasan’s quiet yet significant role in supporting one of India’s most iconic athletes. They also highlighted the personal sacrifices he made to ensure Usha’s success both on the field and in public life.
His death marks the passing of a pillar of strength behind one of India’s celebrated sports icons, leaving a deep void in the sporting and personal lives of those who knew him.
