On Monday, the Congress demanded monetary compensation for those who will be affected by the G20 Summit in Delhi, including street sellers, weekly market dealers, and others. The newly constructed Bharat Mandapam international convention and exposition center in Pragati Maidan will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit from September 9 to 10.
The summit will have an impact on the livelihoods of the underprivileged, including street vendors, fruit, vegetable, and flower vendors, barbers, and weekly market dealers, according to former Delhi minister Haroon Yusuf.
“The government has forced these poor people to stop plying (their trade) for the past 10-15 days,” Yusuf said.
“Only schools in the NDMC area where the G20 Summit will be held should have been closed. Shutting down all schools in Delhi makes no sense. The government should at least ensure that online classes are held during those days,” former Delhi Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan added.
More than 30 heads of state and other high-ranking representatives from the European Union, invited guest nations, 14 presidents of international organizations, and other governments are expected to attend the summit.
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SS Yadav said on Monday during a press conference, “In the New Delhi area, commercial activities will not be allowed. Online delivery services will not be allowed but medicine delivery will be allowed.”
In honor of the summit, the Delhi government has designated the week of September 8–10 a vacation. Throughout the three days, all city schools as well as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi government buildings would be closed.
On September 8–10, all businesses and commercial facilities, including banks and other financial institutions, located inside the New Delhi police area will also be closed.
