The cultural ministry announced that Gita Press, Gorakhpur, will be conferred with Gandhi Peace Prize in 2021 on Sunday. An expert panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the decision.
Conferring Gandhi Peace Prize to Gita Press on the occasion of institution’s 100th anniversary, Prime Minister Modi recalled the role that Gita Press played in promoting the Gandhian principles of peace and social harmony.
“I congratulate Gita Press, Gorakhpur on being conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021. They have done commendable work over the last 100 years towards furthering social and cultural transformations among the people,” PM Modi said.
Gita Press manager Lal Mani Tiwari, told “Our founders never wanted any award/reward for the press. The Trust has taken a unanimous decision to follow our tradition and not to accept any award,” he said. “We pray to God our printing press keeps getting recognition and we keep moving ahead in the right direction,” he added
Gita Press, established in 1923, has issued 41.7 crore books, including 16.21 crore copies of the Bhagvad Gita, in 14 languages. It is the largest publisher of Hindu sacred literature worldwide. It claims that its “primary goal is to promote the ideals and principles of Hindu dharma by publishing Gita, Ramayana, Upanishads, Puranas, talks of prominent saints, and other character-building books and magazines and selling them at heavily discounted costs, so that each and every person can afford it.
