Raj Thackeray’s MNS suffered a major setback in the municipal polls and failed to regain ground across Maharashtra’s urban centres.
Despite aggressive campaigning and a much-publicised political alignment with Shiv Sena (UBT), the party could not translate visibility into votes.
Early trends show the MNS failed to secure a meaningful presence in 22 of the 29 municipal corporations.
Once-considered strongholds slipped away, reflecting the party’s shrinking influence in key urban pockets.
In the high-profile Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election, the setback appeared sharper.
The MNS failed to cross the double-digit mark, securing only a limited number of seats.
The tally fell well below its earlier performances in 2012 and 2017, underlining the scale of decline in the state’s most crucial civic battleground.
Analysts said the Raj-Uddhav Thackeray tie-up failed to deliver a smooth vote transfer.
While some wards saw partial consolidation of the Marathi electorate, the effort proved insufficient against the dominant Mahayuti alliance of the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Beyond Mumbai, the party delivered underwhelming performances in cities such as Pune, Thane, and Nashik.
In Nashik, where the MNS once held the mayor’s office, the party slipped to the margins.
The BJP and the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena emerged as the principal beneficiaries, further sidelining the MNS.
Observers noted that the party’s traditional appeal, rooted in the ‘Marathi Manoos’ narrative and assertive Hindutva, now overlaps heavily with the messaging of rival parties.
This overlap diluted the MNS’s distinct political identity.
After remaining out of power in major civic bodies for nearly a decade, the party struggled to match the organisational strength and resource-heavy campaigns of the ruling alliance. Internal challenges compounded these difficulties.
Raj Thackeray has not yet issued a formal response to the outcome.
Party insiders indicated that the leadership plans an extensive internal review.
Senior leaders also signalled the possibility of legal action over the alleged ‘marker pen’ controversy, claiming irregularities in closely contested wards.
The results raise serious questions about the MNS’s future strategy and relevance in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape.
