Former PM Manmohan Singh Mourns Ratan Tata’s Passing; Praises His Legacy

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed profound sorrow on Thursday following the death of Ratan Tata, the esteemed Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, one of India’s largest and most influential conglomerates.

In a heartfelt condolence message addressed to N Chandrasekaran, current Chairman of Tata Sons, Manmohan Singh described Tata as ‘a titan of Indian industry’ whose contributions extended far beyond the business realm.

He emphasized that Tata was not just a corporate icon; his visionary outlook and commitment to philanthropy were evident in the numerous charitable initiatives he championed throughout his life.

“Ratan Tata had the courage to speak truth to power,” Singh remarked, reflecting on Tata’s integrity and moral compass.

The former PM also shared cherished memories of their collaborative efforts over the years.

“I take this opportunity to convey my deepest condolences on this sad occasion,” Manmohan Singh concluded in his message.

Ratan Tata, 86, passed away on Wednesday at Breach Candy Hospital after receiving treatment for age-related health issues. The renowned industrialist and philanthropist received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in recognition of his significant contributions to the nation.

PM Modi: Ratan Tata A ‘Visionary Leader’ & ‘Extraordinary Human Being’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to Tata earlier in the day, lauding him as a ‘visionary business leader’ and an ‘extraordinary human being’. In a post on X, PM Modi highlighted Tata’s enduring legacy of humility, kindness, and commitment to societal improvement.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being. He provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses. At the same time, his contribution went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared himself to several people thanks to his humility, kindness and an unwavering commitment to making our society better.”

“One of the most unique aspects of Shri Ratan Tata Ji was his passion towards dreaming big and giving back. He was at the forefront of championing causes like education, healthcare, sanitation, animal welfare to name a few,” PM Modi stated.

The Prime Minister further asserted, “My mind is filled with countless interactions with Shri Ratan Tata Ji. I would meet him frequently in Gujarat when I was the CM. We would exchange views on diverse issues. I found his perspectives very enriching. These interactions continued when I came to Delhi. Extremely pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family, friends and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”
