MP CM Mohan Yadav
Mohan Yadav has been selected as the new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, marking the culmination of more than two weeks since the ruling BJP triumphed over its rivals, the Congress, to maintain its hold on the heartland state. Mr. Yadav, who previously served as the Higher Education Minister in the outgoing government, secured victory in the Ujjain Dakshin seat.
Having served as a three-time MLA from the Ujjain district, the appointment of 58-year-old Mr. Yadav is widely perceived as signaling the conclusion of the political journey, at least within the state, for his predecessor, Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
In a move aimed at managing ambitions and fostering harmony ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections next year, the BJP has also designated two deputy chief ministers, namely Jagdish Deora and Rajesh Shukla. Additionally, former Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, one of three ex-cabinet members who contested last month’s election, has assumed the role of Assembly Speaker. Speculation abounds that Mr. Tomar, who led the ministry during protests against farm laws, could be in line to succeed Mr. Chouhan in the top post.
