In Khargone district, a wave of distress has swept through local farming communities as maize farmers report devastating crop failures, leading to feelings of betrayal. Over 200 farmers planted maize seeds from Advanta company across more than 700 acres, only to discover that their yield has been alarmingly low. In many cases, fields yielded only one or two corn cobs, while some plots produced no grains at all, resulting in significant financial losses for the farmers.
Frustrated by the situation, affected farmers lodged complaints with the Collector and the Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department. In response, officials conducted a thorough survey of the maize crops and prepared a Panchnama documenting the poor conditions. Their findings corroborated the farmers’ claims, prompting immediate action from the Collector, who ordered the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the Advanta company.

The investigation revealed that the maize seeds, specifically the PAC 751 variety purchased from various local shops, failed to produce viable crops. Farmers from villages including Nagjhiri, Umrakhali, Kumharkheda, and Kotha Khurd reported that after sowing, the cobs did not produce grains, leading to crop drying and further losses. The Deputy Director of Agriculture formed an investigation team on August 30, which confirmed that the low yield resulted from an abnormal growth pattern—multiple small cobs forming at single points on the plant, many of which contained little to no grains.
As the situation unfolds, the Agriculture Department has emphasized the importance of accountability within agricultural practices, aiming to support the farmers and restore their faith in the system. The plight of these farmers highlights the urgent need for stringent quality control measures in seed production to prevent such crises in the future. With their livelihoods at stake, the farmers of Khargone district continue to seek justice and fair compensation for their losses.
