Family Of Murdered R.G. Kar Medical College Doctor Seeks Court-Monitored Investigation

The family of a woman doctor who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital last week has petitioned the Calcutta High Court, requesting a court-monitored probe into the case. The petition, submitted on Tuesday, expresses concerns over the investigation’s progress and claims that several suspects have been excluded from the inquiry.

The family argues that only a court-monitored investigation can ensure a thorough and transparent examination of the case. They have questioned the Kolkata Police’s assertion that Sanjay Ray, a civic volunteer who has been arrested, is the sole perpetrator. Medical professionals and the public have also expressed doubts, suggesting that the nature of the victim’s injuries indicates the involvement of multiple individuals.

The Calcutta High Court has admitted the petition, though a hearing date has yet to be set. Concurrently, public interest litigations (PILs) have been filed at the division bench of the High Court, with petitions calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. These PILs challenge the credibility of the ongoing investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT).

In response to the growing concerns, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday that the investigation would be transferred to the CBI if the SIT fails to complete its work by next Sunday.

The body of the junior doctor, a postgraduate student, was discovered in the hospital’s seminar room on Friday morning, August 9. The arrest of civic volunteer Sanjay Ray has intensified scrutiny and sparked widespread outrage. Doctors and nurses have led protests in Kolkata and across India, demanding justice and a thorough investigation into the brutal crime.
