
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival for the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference, the city is bracing for sweeping traffic restrictions.
A comprehensive security cordon and major diversions will be in force from Sunday evening until Monday afternoon.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has released details stating that the PM will inaugurate and address the apex-level defence forum, where top military and civilian leaders will discuss institutional reform, integration, and technological modernisation.
The conference runs from 15–17 September under the theme ‘Year of Reforms – Transforming for the Future’.
PM Modi is expected to land at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 5:35 PM on Sunday and will travel to Raj Bhavan, where he will stay overnight.
On Monday, his schedule includes visiting Vijay Durg at Fort William to address the conference at 9:30 AM, concluding his engagement at 1:00 PM, before departing for the airport at 1:40 PM.
Traffic Restrictions & Banned Zones
The Kolkata Traffic Police issued an advisory laying out the planned diversions and restrictions:
- Authorities will ban all goods vehicles from key roads on Sunday between 3:30 PM and 8:00 PM, and again on Monday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Roads affected include VIP Road, Ultadanga New Flyover, EM Bypass, Maa Flyover, AJC Bose Flyover, and Red Road, among others.
- Officials will impose parking regulations, control movement (including for trams and carts), and enforce vehicle restrictions as needed.
- Heavy goods vehicles will face additional restrictions around Raj Bhavan from 6:00 AM on September 14 to 10:00 PM on September 15, including a full closure of the road from Government Place East to Old Court House Street during late-night to early-morning hours.
Traffic Police will adjust diversions from key arteries in line with the PM’s movements.
The Armed Forces hold the Combined Commanders’ Conference once every two years as an institutional event.
This time, it will involve high-ranking members of the Armed Forces and top civilian officials discussing India’s evolving geo‑strategic posture, reforms in military operations, and readiness for multi-domain challenges.
Officials say this year’s focus is on deepening integration across military branches and adopting new technological frameworks.
