The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered initial leads in its probe into financial misconduct at the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, revealing possible illicit investments in Bangladesh’s real estate market.

Documents seized during the investigation suggest that some of the funds in question were channeled through hawala networks into property ventures in the neighboring country.

Investigators have identified two Bangladeshi businessmen with real estate interests who reportedly visited Kolkata recently to engage with Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, now under scrutiny.

The authorities are closely examining these interactions for potential links to the alleged financial irregularities.

In a separate development, last week ED officials seized gold valued at Rs 7 crore from the residence of Swapan Saha, a Kolkata-based businessman and known associate of Ghosh, located in Salt Lake.

Saha’s inability to provide a credible explanation for the gold’s origins or its acquisition led to its confiscation, with suspicions arising that smugglers might have brought it from Dubai through Bangladesh.

The ED’s Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) has revealed a network of shell companies potentially used by Ghosh’s associates to secure contracts for medical equipment and maintenance at RG Kar.

The investigation has also unearthed several high-value assets owned by Ghosh, including a pair of luxury flats and a lavish suburban bungalow, raising questions about his wealth’s legitimacy.

Both the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are actively pursuing leads in this case, with a focus on uncovering the full extent of the financial improprieties at RG Kar and assessing Ghosh’s assets in relation to his reported income.
