Ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition that sought permission for incarcerated political leaders to conduct virtual campaigning via video conferencing.
The court termed the petition as contrary to fundamental legal principles and a blatant attempt at malicious propaganda.
The petition, filed by final year law student Amarjeet Gupta, argued for the Election Commission to establish a mechanism ensuring the participation of arrested political figures in electoral campaigning via VC.
Additionally, it urged for immediate notification to the Election Commission regarding the arrest of any political leader or candidate.
However, the High Court, led by the acting Chief Justice, expressed strong disapproval of the petition.
The bench labeled it as audacious and in direct conflict with basic legal tenets.
The court emphasized its commitment to staying apolitical and underscored the misuse of legal proceedings for strategic purposes.
