As the mercury climbs in Delhi, so does the concern over the escalating water crisis, prompting the Delhi government to take urgent action.
In response to the looming crisis, the Delhi government has lodged a plea in the Supreme Court seeking additional water supply from neighboring states.
Case So Far:
Citing the pressing need for additional water resources, the Delhi government’s plea targets Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, urging for a month-long augmentation to mitigate the water shortage gripping the capital.
At the forefront of this plea is Atishi, Delhi’s Water Minister, who has accused the Haryana government of exacerbating the crisis by curtailing water supply from the Yamuna, particularly amidst soaring temperatures.
These allegations underscore the gravity of the situation as Delhi grapples with dwindling water resources.
In response to the crisis, the Delhi government has taken proactive measures to address the water scarcity.
The establishment of Water Tanker War Rooms aims to streamline water distribution, with citizens now able to request water tankers by dialing 1916.
Furthermore, to combat water wastage, the Delhi Jal Board has deployed 200 teams to enforce restrictions on the use of potable water at construction sites, car washing centers, and car repair shops.
Non-compliance with these regulations may result in the sealing of offending sites, as warned by the Delhi government.
The current water crisis draws attention to a longstanding issue governed by a Supreme Court mandate dating back to 1996.
The mandate tasked Haryana with maintaining water levels in the Wazirabad Barrage to meet Delhi’s water needs. It directed an additional allocation of 33 cusecs of water.
Consequently, the availability and quality of water in the Wazirabad Barrage are contingent upon Haryana’s compliance.
It’s crucial to highlight that the water supplied from the Wazirabad plant directly caters to essential areas in North West Delhi, the Lutyens Zone, Central, and North Delhi. This underscores the pressing necessity for concerted efforts to tackle the escalating water crisis in the national capital.
