Delhi Floods: BJP Criticizes Kejriwal’s Response, Accusing Him of Merely Tweeting While Army Engineers Did The Work

Severe challenges coming across Delhi’s way consequent to flooded roads and a scarcity of drinking water, led to a blame game between the AAP government of Delhi and the BJP government of Haryana. The parties are pointing fingers at each other regarding the unprecedented flood situation in the national capital.

On Thursday, the Yamuna water entered the city, but it started receding on Friday night, leaving ITO in Delhi still submerged on Saturday morning. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed gratitude to the Army Engineer regiment for tirelessly working for 20 hours to open the ITO barrage.

However, Amit Malviya of the BJP claimed that while the Army engineers did the actual work, Kejriwal only took credit by tweeting about it.

A contentious issue emerged between Delhi and Haryana regarding the release of water from the Hathnikund barrage. The AAP shared a video on Friday, alleging that the BJP government in Haryana diverted all the water from the barrage towards Delhi, while the Uttar Pradesh side remained dry.

In response, the Haryana government clarified that the claim was misleading. According to the guidelines set by the Central Water Commission (CWC), if the water flow exceeds 1 lakh cusec, it cannot be diverted towards Western Yamuna or Eastern Yamuna Canal, which are alternative routes apart from Delhi.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s advisor, retired IAS Devendra Singh, stated that there was nothing controversial about it, and an unnecessary controversy was being created. He further mentioned that water from Hathnikund is only diverted towards Uttar Pradesh for irrigation purposes, never to prevent floods.
