A Delhi court on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Bibhav Kumar, an aide to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, until 22 June in connection with the Swati Maliwal assault case.
Authorities arrested Bibhav Kumar on May 18 in connection with assaulting Maliwal, an Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha member and former Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, on May 13.
The Delhi Police had sought an extension of Kumar’s custody, arguing that his release could interfere with the ongoing investigation.
The defense counsel opposed the prosecution’s plea, emphasizing that there was no risk of Kumar obstructing the investigation.
Despite this, the court sided with the prosecution, granting the extension.
The Tis Hazari Court had previously dismissed Kumar’s bail plea.
The case began when Maliwal filed a formal complaint with the Delhi Police on 17 May, detailing the harassment and torture she allegedly endured at the Chief Minister’s residence on 13 May.
This incident has sparked significant controversy and public interest, drawing attention to the internal conflicts within the Aam Aadmi Party.
The investigation is ongoing, and the court’s decision to extend Kumar’s custody underscores the seriousness with which the judiciary is treating the allegations.
