Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Reviews Flood-Hit Yamuna Bazar; Assures 24×7 Support

With the Yamuna swelling dangerously close to the evacuation mark, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday visited flood-affected areas, including Yamuna Bazar, to take stock of the situation and review flood-preparedness measures.

Accompanied by Cabinet Minister Parvesh Verma and senior officials, Gupta inspected Asita Ghat, Yamuna Chhath Ghat, Regulator No 12, the East Delhi District Magistrate’s office, and the Central Flood Control Room.

She said her government had placed its flood-preparedness plan into action before the onset of the monsoon, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring and coordinated response.

During her visit, Gupta noted that the water level had risen significantly but emphasised that there was no problem of retention, as the flow continued downstream.

“These houses are situated near the Yamuna floodplain. I had earlier requested residents to shift temporarily, but many chose to stay. Still, we are fully committed to ensuring their safety and convenience,” she said.

She acknowledged the power supply disruption in the colony and announced that the government was installing solar panels and floodlights to address electricity concerns.

“Medical relief camps have been set up, and food and water are being provided. Even if residents decide to stay, the government will stand by them,” she added.

At 8 AM on Tuesday, the Yamuna’s water level at the Old Railway Bridge touched 205.79 metres. It was just short of the 206-metre evacuation mark.

On Monday afternoon, the river had already crossed the danger mark of 205.33 metres, reaching 205.55 metres. Officials attributed the surge to rainfall in the Upper Yamuna region and releases from the Hathni Kund Barrage in Haryana.

Meeting Residents at Yamuna Bazar

Later in the day, the Chief Minister met with residents of Yamuna Bazar colony, many of whom had taken refuge on rooftops and in makeshift tents. She assured them that relief and rescue teams were on high alert, with 14 boats deployed at key points.

“Wherever there is any pain or suffering, we stand with the people,” Gupta told reporters after her interaction. “I am available 24×7 for the citizens of Delhi.”

She reassured locals that the water would not rise further and would start receding by evening.

Calling Yamuna Bazar one of the lowest points of the floodplain, she wrote on X, “This area is a low-lying part of the Yamuna’s floodplain, so the water reached here but did not advance further. There is no flood-like situation in Delhi. This was the peak water level, and now the water is receding.”

“I want to assure the people of Delhi that the government stands with you at every step. Your safety and convenience are our top priorities, so there is no need to worry,” the post further added.
