India-China Relations In Focus As Ajit Doval Meets Wang Yi In Delhi

National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Tuesday for a new round of the Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question. The discussions came during Wang Yi’s two-day visit to India, which began on Monday afternoon.

The talks will address the ongoing border situation, bilateral trade, and the possible resumption of direct flight services between the two nations.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Wang Yi’s visit aims to help both countries implement the consensus reached last year between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China is ready to work with India to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen political trust, and manage differences constructively.

Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong echoed these remarks on social media, stressing the importance of stable and cooperative ties.

Jaishankar Stresses Border Peace and De-Escalation

Before he met with NSA Doval, Wang Yi met External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar. The minister underlined that peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remains the basis for progress in India-China relations.

“It is essential that the de-escalation process moves forward. The foundation for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas,” Jaishankar stated.

He also highlighted the need for candid and constructive dialogue, guided by mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest.

EAM Jaishankar noted that both sides would discuss economic and trade issues, connectivity, river data sharing, pilgrimages, border trade, and people-to-people exchanges.

He added that India and China, as the world’s two largest nations, also have a role in shaping a fair and multipolar world order.

“Reformed multilateralism is the call of the day,” Jaishankar said, while stressing the importance of stability in the global economy and cooperation in countering terrorism.

India and China have experienced strained relations in recent years, largely due to border tensions. Observers see Wang Yi’s visit as an opportunity to re-establish dialogue and address key concerns.

“With both sides seeking to move ahead, we expect that the discussions will contribute to building a stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship between India and China,” Jaishankar concluded.
