The death toll of the ongoing encounter in the Anantnag area of Jammu and Kashmir increased from 3 to 4 as one more soldier succumbed to his injuries on Friday. An official stated that the area is sealed off and that a search operation is underway.
The encounter came after a gunfight on Wednesday between security personnel and terrorists hiding in the Kokernag region of Anantnag. Even though the encounter is still going on, three people were killed in the gunfight: a Jammu and Kashmir Police DSP, a Company Commander (Major), and the Commanding Officer (Colonel) of an Army Rashtriya Rifles unit.
The other three officers who died are Major Ashish, DSP Humayun Bhat, and Colonel Manpreet Singh. The fourth deceased soldier’s identity has not yet been made public.
On Friday morning, the bodies of Major Ashish Dhonchack and Colonel Manpreet Singh were delivered to their homes in Panipat. At his Budgam home, Deputy Superintendent Humayun Bhat was laid to rest on Thursday. Following the encounter on Thursday, the dead were airlifted to Srinagar by the Indian Army. On Thursday night, a tribute was paid to their mortals.
According to officials, when the shooting started, the army was commanding the troops based on information from specialized intelligence and looking for terrorists in a hideout. The terrorists opened fire, quickly killing the Colonel and wounded two other officers, who later passed away in a Srinagar hospital.
The “Resistance Front,” a Lashkar proxy, is thought to be the source of the terrorists. Security personnel believe that two to three terrorists are camped out nearby. According to officials, Heron drones and quadcopters have been placed in the region to conduct surveillance and help in search operation.
