The recovery of the Indian aviation sector follows years of severe losses brought on by the Covid virus.

According to Gen. V.K. Singh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the industry lost 11,658 crore for the fiscal year (FY) 2021–2022; in the prior Covid–affected years, FY21 and FY20, the cumulative losses were 12,479 crore and 4,770 crore, respectively.

The worst, though, appears to be behind us now. India is on the verge of becoming a significant international aviation market, according to the most recent market analysis report from the international airlines trade group IATA (International Air Transport group).

India appears to have cemented its place as the third largest aviation market in the world, with air passenger traffic predicted to reach 395 million in 2023–24. According to IATA’s most recent market analysis study, India’s aviation business surpassed other booming markets including the US, China, and Japan in terms of passenger load factor (PLF) with 81.6% in February 2023 compared to 85.2% in January 2022.

The Indian aviation sector has accelerated, according to ratings agency ICRA, as continuously rising air demand.

The outlook for the Indian aviation sector has been changed from “negative” to “stable.” Following a 55–60% increase in FY2023, ICRA predicted last month that domestic passenger traffic would grow by 8–13% in FY2024 to reach 145–150 million, which is significantly more than it was before Covid.

According to the most recent Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data, domestic airlines in India saw a gain in passengers of 51.7% year over year between January and March 2023.

The airlines carried 375.04 lakh passengers as of March 2023 compared to 247.23 lakh during the same period last year, with a 21.41% increase month over month. According to the DGCA, SpiceJet had the greatest passenger load factor (PLF) in March 2023 at 92.3%, followed by Vistara and Go First at 91.6% and 90.2%, respectively.

A total of 73.17 lakh passengers were transported in March 2023, making private airline IndiGo the carrier with the greatest market share at 56.8%. Vistara and Air India came in second and third, respectively, with 8.9% (11.49 lakh passengers) and 8.8% (11.39 lakh passengers).
