Congress To Intensify Political Offensive Against Modi Government Following Hindenburg Research Allegations

In response to Hindenburg Research’s recent allegations, the Congress party plans to escalate its political offensive against the Modi government.

Despite the US-based agency’s findings not yielding substantial evidence, Congress remains steadfast in its demands for a thorough investigation.

Congress Plans 22 August Protest For JPC Probe & SEBI Chairperson’s Resignation

Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal announced that the party will stage a nationwide protest on 22 August, calling for two key actions:

  • A Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the Hindenburg charges
  • The resignation of SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri

Venugopal stated that Congress workers will surround the Enforcement Directorate (ED) offices in all state capitals as part of the protest.

He criticized the current financial market regulators, asserting that only a JPC probe could deliver justice.

During a party meeting with AICC General Secretaries, state in-charges, and PCC presidents, Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, voiced strong criticism of what they termed a collusion between the market regulator and major conglomerates.

On 10 August, Hindenburg Research alleged that SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri and her husband, Dhaval Buch, had stakes in offshore funds linked to a large business entity.

This allegation triggered a political firestorm, with the INDIA bloc and BJP exchanging sharp criticisms.

Congress accused the Modi government of undermining financial institutions, while the BJP countered by alleging a conspiracy to destabilize Indian markets.

Rahul Gandhi questioned why SEBI’s chairperson had not resigned in light of the allegations and argued that both she and the Prime Minister should be held accountable to investors.

SEBI Chief Puri and her husband have dismissed the charges as baseless and malicious, describing them as attempts at character assassination.

In addition to the Hindenburg issue, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh announced plans for a major campaign addressing three critical issues: a JPC probe, respect for the Constitution, and a caste-based survey.

Ramesh indicated that the upcoming mobilization will see party workers across the country addressing social and economic injustices.
