Congress leader Pawan Khera voiced serious concerns on Tuesday regarding the safety of medical professionals in light of the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata.
The senior Congress figure questioned whether the current environment is secure for those in the medical field.
Khera Slams BJP’s Hasty Judgments, Urges Focus On Doctor Safety
In an interview with IANS, Khera emphasized, “Our primary focus should be on ensuring the safety of doctors rather than prematurely assigning blame in the Kolkata case. The critical issue is whether our society can protect its medical practitioners.”
Khera criticized the BJP’s approach to the case, suggesting that their haste in declaring guilt or innocence reflects a disregard for women’s safety.
“If the BJP is quick to judge, it indicates a lack of concern for women’s protection,” he stated.
He assured that the investigation will hold the guilty parties accountable, and no responsible government will absolve the criminals.
He also noted the BJP’s controversial support for party members involved in previous high-profile cases such as Unnao and Kathua, suggesting a pattern of behavior inconsistent with justice.
The Congress MP’s comments come in response to the widespread outrage following the rape and murder of a resident doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August.
This incident has sparked nationwide protests and strikes by doctors demanding justice.
Over 3,00,000 resident doctors across India have participated in the strike, affecting outpatient services at major government hospitals, including AIIMS, Safdarjung, and MAMC, although emergency services remain operational.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a thorough and impartial investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the West Bengal police.
In response to the crisis, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the family of the deceased doctor and promised support.
She also indicated that if the police fail to resolve the case by 18 August, it would be referred to the CBI, despite concerns over the agency’s effectiveness.
