Delhi High Court Refuses Interim Order In Defamation Case Against Govindanand Saraswati

Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati sought an interim order in a defamation case against Govindanand Saraswati, but the Delhi High Court denied the request. The Court remarked that as a saint, Avimukteshwaranand should not be concerned with such matters, stating that saints gain respect through their deeds and cannot be easily defamed. The Court will hear the case again on August 29.

During the hearing, Avimukteshwaranand’s lawyer argued that Govindanand had publicly insulted his client by calling him a “fake baba,” “hypocrite baba,” and “thief baba.” Govindanand Saraswati Maharaj had accused the Congress party of using Avimukteshwaranand as a pawn, making these serious allegations during a press conference. In response, Avimukteshwaranand filed a defamation lawsuit.

Govindanand Saraswati Maharaj claimed that Avimukteshwaranand is unworthy of being called a sadhu or saint, let alone a Shankaracharya. He alleged that a “fake baba” named Avimukteshwaranand has gained popularity and is being mistakenly labeled as a Shankaracharya on television. He urged citizens to recognize Avimukteshwaranand as a fraud, unworthy of any saintly titles.

During the press conference, Govindanand Saraswati Maharaj presented documents, including a letter from Priyanka Gandhi to Avimukteshwaranand dated September 13, 2022, as evidence. He also accused Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of defying a Supreme Court order regarding Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati. Govindanand Saraswati Maharaj demanded that Priyanka Gandhi apologize within 15 days, warning of potential legal action if she failed to comply.
