Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for next year, the Congress party has undergone a restructuring process, appointing former MLA Ajay Rai as the new head of the Uttar Pradesh Pradeshik Congress Committee (UPPCC), effectively replacing former MP Brijlal Khabari on Thursday.
National General Secretary KC Venugopal issued a letter confirming this development. The letter stated, “The Congress President has designated former MLA Ajai Rai as the President of the UP Congress Committee with immediate effect. The party acknowledges the contributions made by outgoing PCC President Brijlal Khabri and all the zonal presidents.”
Up until this point, Ajay Rai had been serving as the president of the Prayagraj zone in Uttar Pradesh. It is worth noting that Brijlal Khabri, hailing from the Dalit community, was appointed as the UPPCC president in October of the previous year.
Ajay Rai, belonging to a Bhumihar family, is known as a prominent figure in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. With a political career spanning five times as an MLA, Rai notably contested in the Lok Sabha elections twice, against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and lost. The first time he contested opposite to the PM was in 2014 and again in the 2019 general elections.
Commencing his political journey with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rai transitioned to the Congress party in 2012 and secured victory in the assembly elections of the same year.
