CM Of Assam Advises Officials To Be Prepared To Combat Floods

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, issued an order on Sunday ordering the government apparatus to be prepared for any flood-related situation due to the arrival of the monsoon and the potential for flooding throughout the state.

Assam has had rain over the previous few days as a result of the northeastern monsoon, which began on Saturday.

Sarma stated that all government ministries, including NHAI, NHIDC, NDRF, and SDRF, should be attentive to reach out to the afflicted people during the natural calamity in a video conference with deputy commissioners (DCs) and other senior officials.

The chief minister requested that Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, principal secretary for revenue and disaster management, take action to pre-position NDRF and SDRF personnel in susceptible areas, particularly in Dima Hasao.

Additionally, he requested that the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) turn on an early warning system to alert citizens to impending flood hazards.

Sarma instructed the DCs to establish emergency camps and organise aid distribution at these facilities in the event that flood waters submerged low-lying districts.

He requested that the deputy commissioners go and take precautions at the embankments that were breached in the floods of 2022.

The chief minister also gave the DCs instructions to evaluate the food and livestock stock in each district.

In an attempt to prevent dishonest individuals from harming embankments, Sarma reminded the DCs of the damage done to an embankment in the Cachar district last year that resulted in a catastrophic flood in Silchar town and its surrounding areas. Sarma asked the DCs to maintain vigilance and, if necessary, ensure area domination.

The CM also examined the medical teams’ readiness for any emergency, including the availability of medicine supplies.

He requested that the Kamrup Metropolitan DC keep an eye on the district’s 382 landslide-prone areas at all times and take appropriate action in case of heavy or continuous rain.
