Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recently addressed the pressing need to bolster India’s judiciary by increasing the number of judges across all levels, including the Supreme Court, high courts, and district courts. Speaking at a Q&A session hosted by the Oxford Union, he emphasized that India’s judge-to-population ratio is one of the lowest globally, underscoring the urgent requirement for more judges. Chandrachud highlighted ongoing discussions with the government to enhance judicial capacity and expedite the filling of vacancies.

Currently, the Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, but any increase would necessitate a constitutional amendment. Chandrachud, who is set to retire in November, will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, with his tenure beginning on November 11, 2024, and concluding on May 13, 2025.
