A 60-year-old man receiving treatment for Covid-19 at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai died on Wednesday.
This marks a rare Covid-19 fatality in the city after a prolonged period of low mortality.
The deceased, Mohan, had multiple existing health conditions.
Hospital authorities confirmed that he was admitted with diabetes and chronic respiratory issues. His condition remained critical since admission.
Despite intensive care and continuous monitoring, his health worsened quickly.

Doctors said the combined effect of Covid-19 and his pre-existing illnesses made recovery difficult.
Tamil Nadu Health Department officials confirmed the cause of death.
A senior official stated, “While the immediate cause was Covid-19, co-morbidities significantly worsened his condition.”
Tamil Nadu continues to report low numbers of active cases. Health authorities say the situation remains under control.
“We are taking all preventive steps to avoid a resurgence,” said a department spokesperson.

Officials reminded vulnerable individuals to stay cautious.
“This unfortunate case shows that those with co-morbidities must keep up with vaccinations and avoid crowds,” they said.
The Health Department is maintaining active surveillance, especially in cities.
Hospitals have been advised to stay ready for high-risk patients.
Public health experts urged continued vigilance. They warned that Covid-19 still poses a serious threat to the elderly and those with chronic health issues.
