Assam Cabinet Approves Arms Licences For Citizens In Border Regions

In a bid to enhance self-defence in Assam’s sensitive and border regions, the state Cabinet has approved the issuance of arms licences in Assam to eligible residents.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the move on Wednesday. He cited the state’s difficult terrain and unique security concerns as key reasons.

Plan To Empower Border Communities

“Assam is a difficult and sensitive state. We have decided to issue arms licences to eligible individuals living in remote, vulnerable, and border areas,” Sarma said.

The initiative aims to empower indigenous citizens and original inhabitants.

Sarma stressed that the purpose is not to militarise civilians, but to build confidence in communities facing repeated threats.

Detailed guidelines will be released soon. These will outline the eligibility criteria, application steps, and verification processes.

All applications will be reviewed under the Arms Act.

The decision reflects a major shift in Assam’s internal security approach. It shows the state government’s focus on protecting borderland populations from external threats.

Sarma Targets Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

On the same day, Sarma escalated his attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. He made serious allegations about Gogoi’s 2013 visit to Pakistan and alleged links with Pakistan’s establishment.

“What Gogoi admitted so far is only 10 per cent of the story,” Sarma told reporters.

He promised to reveal what he called ‘damning’ evidence on 10 September.

“There are serious national security implications. We will take action,” he warned, criticising Rahul Gandhi for trusting Gogoi with a leadership role.

Gaurav Gogoi earlier addressed concerns related to his visit to Pakistan and his wife’s professional background.
