The Central government has increased the salaries, allowances, and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs), effective from April 1, 2023, as per a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
The monthly salary of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members has been raised from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.24 lakh.
Their daily allowance has also increased from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500, according to the notification.
The pension for former MPs has been revised from ₹25,000 to ₹31,000 per month.
Additionally, the extra pension for every year of service beyond five years has been raised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.
First Revision Since 2018
This is the first revision in MPs’ salaries and allowances since April 2018.
At that time, the base salary was set at ₹1 lakh per month to align with inflation and rising costs of living.
The 2018 revision also granted MPs:
- ₹70,000 per month as a constituency allowance
- ₹60,000 per month as an office allowance
- ₹2,000 per day as a sessional allowance
With the latest hike, these allowances will also increase.
Additional Perks For MPs
MPs continue to enjoy several other benefits, including:
Free domestic travel: 34 flights per year for themselves and their families
First-class train travel for professional and personal use
Mileage allowance for road travel
Annual utility benefits: 50,000 free electricity units and 4,000 kilolitres of water
Official accommodation: Rent-free housing in New Delhi, with options for hostels, apartments, or bungalows based on seniority.
MPs who do not use government housing receive a housing allowance.
This revision comes amid the ongoing Budget session of Parliament, highlighting the government’s move to adjust MPs’ compensation in line with inflation.
