Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra began her electoral journey by taking the oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha. She represents the Wayanad constituency, joining her brother Rahul Gandhi in the current Lok Sabha. Priyanka’s entry marks the second time in history that two members of the Nehru-Gandhi family are serving in Parliament together, a first since Jawaharlal Nehru and Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit.
The presence of Priyanka and Rahul in Parliament revives a historic precedent from 1953 when Jawaharlal Nehru and Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit represented the Nehru family in the Lok Sabha. Throughout India’s parliamentary history, the Nehru-Gandhi family has been a dominant force, with at least one family member present in the Lok Sabha, except for brief periods. In some instances, as many as five family members have held seats simultaneously.
The Nehru-Gandhi family’s political legacy in the Lok Sabha began in 1951 when five members of the family were elected. Jawaharlal Nehru, Feroze Gandhi, Uma Nehru, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, and Sheorajvati Nehru all secured seats in the first election. This family representation continued for decades, with notable milestones such as Indira Gandhi’s leadership following Nehru’s death and the tragic loss of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.
