BRICS Summit 2026: WHO Chief Tedros Arrives In New Delhi

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, which India is hosting at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed Tedros and highlighted the importance of global cooperation on health issues for shared progress and prosperity.

Belarus Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov also arrived in the national capital to participate in the summit.

The MEA described India-Belarus relations as warm and friendly, with both countries expanding cooperation across bilateral and multilateral areas.

Philippines President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the summit as the current chair of ASEAN. Union Minister of State Anupriya Patel received him at the airport.

The MEA said India and ASEAN maintain a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership covering trade, maritime security and regional connectivity in the Indo-Pacific.

World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla also reached New Delhi on Friday.

The MEA said their participation would strengthen discussions on inclusive trade, development and shared priorities among Global South partners.

India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 follows the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’.

The MEA said the theme reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a people-centric approach based on the principle of ‘Humanity First’.

Under India’s BRICS Chairship, more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements have taken place across over 25 cities. These initiatives have focused on strengthening cooperation across three key pillars: political and security cooperation, economic and financial collaboration, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

India has used business-to-business and people-to-people initiatives to advance practical and development-oriented outcomes and strengthen the strategic partnership among BRICS members and partners.
