New Delhi, August 17, 2024: The Lalit Kala Academy in New Delhi hosted the launch of “Mithila Art: A 360 Degree Review” today. This landmark publication, the first comprehensive work on Madhubani Art, highlights the art form from the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal.
Artists, culture enthusiasts, and the public gathered to witness the book’s unveiling. The publication is the result of years of research by an international team: Ms. Binita Malik from Mithilangan in New Delhi, Dr. Minu Agarwal of CEPT University, Dr. Laura Zizka from EHL, Switzerland, and Professor (Dr.) Prashant Das from IIM Ahmedabad.
Book Bridges Tradition with Modern Insight
The book bridges traditional art and modern cultural studies. It combines scholarly analysis with engaging narratives, making it a crucial resource for academics, art lovers, and cultural historians. The editors’ expertise ensures that the book is both intellectually rigorous and accessible.
At the launch, the editors discussed their personal connections to the project. Prof. Prashant Das, from the Mithila region, expressed his motivation. “Mithila Art has lacked representation in literature. This book fills that gap and offers a complete reference,” he said.
Dr. Minu Agarwal highlighted the book’s role in revealing the deeper meanings behind Madhubani Art. “This book uncovers dimensions of Mithila Art beyond its vibrant surface, offering insights known to few,” she explained.
Artistic Design Enhances Cultural Insight
Shreya Sarda’s Mumbai-based firm, DesignFlyover (DFO), designed the book, turning each page into a visual masterpiece. The design team invested months creating a sensory journey for readers, enhancing their exploration of the art form.
Prominent figures such as Amitabh Kant, former CEO of Niti Aayog, and Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, wrote forewords, highlighting the book’s importance.
Dr. Laura Zizka praised the book’s impact. “This book reconnects us with our origins and our identity. Each chapter provides deep insights and heartfelt reflections,” she said.
Ms. Binita Malik emphasized the book’s role in explaining Madhubani Art’s unique language and grammar. “We aimed to convey the special language and structure of Mithila Art to make it easier to learn,” she noted.
