The BJP secured a decisive victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats and ending its long absence from power in the capital. However, the party contested the polls without projecting a CM candidate, leaving room for intense speculation.
Who Will Be Delhi’s Next CM?
Parvesh Verma, who won his seat by defeating former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, stands out as a prominent figure among those considering the Chief Ministerial role. Verma’s victory, along with other potential candidates such as Rekha Gupta, Shikha Roy, Vijender Gupta, Satish Upadhyay, Ashish Sood, Pawan Sharma, Kapil Mishra, and Abhay Verma, has sparked debates about who would be the most effective leader for the capital.
The BJP’s historical tendency to surprise opponents with unexpected CM picks, as seen in states like Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, fuels the speculation that the party may opt for an outsider candidate, someone not directly tied to the current pool of prominent figures within Delhi’s BJP leadership.
Final Decision After PM Modi’s Return
On Wednesday morning, the BJP’s election management committee for the Delhi polls, led by party election in-charge Baijayant Panda, Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva, and the seven Delhi Lok Sabha MPs, will meet at the Delhi BJP office.
The committee will discuss a range of issues, including the party’s strengths and weaknesses during the elections and its performance in various constituencies across the city. However, the party will likely finalize the CM’s name after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his trip to France and the U.S. on February 14 or 15.
In addition to choosing a new CM, party leaders have emphasized that the new Delhi cabinet will reflect a broad and inclusive representation of the city’s diverse communities. Leaders expect the cabinet to include individuals from various social groups, such as Jats, Dalits, Purvanchalis, Sikhs, Paharis, and Baniyas.
This move aims to balance social representation and appeal to a wide range of constituencies, ensuring the cabinet reflects Delhi’s demographic diversity.
