The West Bengal Legislative Assembly will hold a detailed discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’ during its upcoming monsoon session, which begins on 9 June.
Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay confirmed on Monday that the Assembly will place the motion on the floor during the two-week session.
The business advisory committee will decide whether the treasury bench will move the motion or the Speaker will table it suo motu.
The committee, which will meet just before the session begins, will also finalise the date for the discussion.
The motion comes in the backdrop of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s earlier proposal for a special session of Parliament following the return of Indian MPs who are currently part of multi-party foreign delegations under the ‘Operation Sindoor’ Outreach Programme.
Observers see the operation as a diplomatic initiative involving visits and engagement in key countries.
In response to the CM’s suggestion, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari demanded a special session of the West Bengal Assembly to debate the communal unrest in Murshidabad district last month.
The violence followed protests against the newly enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, which turned violent in minority-dominated areas.
When reporters asked about the demand, Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay said the Assembly could consider the issue if the opposition submits a formal proposal.
He, however, recalled previous instances where the opposition raised issues but later staged walkouts, particularly during the Chief Minister’s address.
With several contentious topics on the table, including the Murshidabad violence, the recent police action against protesting teachers, and the inauguration of a temple in Digha modelled after Odisha’s Shree Jagannath Dham, political observers anticipate a turbulent session.
The temple controversy has stirred emotions, with critics alleging it undermines Odisha’s cultural heritage.
Meanwhile, the cane-charge on ‘untainted’ teachers who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court order has also ignited public outcry.
The monsoon session of the Assembly is set to become a focal point of political debate in West Bengal.
The discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’ may serve as a broader platform for both the government and opposition to outline their stances on national security, communal harmony, and state-centred relations.
