Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that his BJP government will soon introduce a law imposing life imprisonment for cases related to “love jihad.” Sarma made this statement during a state-level BJP executive meeting on Sunday in Guwahati. “We spoke about ‘love jihad’ during the elections. Soon, we will bring a law which will award life imprisonment in such cases,” Sarma said.
In the same meeting, Sarma revealed plans for a new domicile policy. The policy will require state government job applicants to be Assamese-born. He assured party members that the government has prioritized indigenous people for the “one lakh government jobs” promised before the elections. This priority will be evident when the full list is published.
Sarma also addressed the regulation of land sales between Hindus and Muslims. While the government cannot outright prevent such transactions, Sarma stated that his administration has mandated obtaining the chief minister’s consent before proceeding with any sale.
Earlier this month, Sarma claimed that Assam could become a Muslim-majority state by 2041, citing a 30 percent growth in the Muslim population every decade. He noted that Muslims currently make up 40 percent of Assam’s population, according to “statistical sampling.” He contrasted this with the Hindu population’s growth rate of 16 percent per decade, emphasizing the significant difference.
These announcements reflect the Assam government’s efforts to implement its election promises and address demographic concerns within the state.
